Nafplio Greece

The first capital of independent Greece, Nafplio is a coastal city with centuries-old castles set against turquoise blue waters.

With glimpses of its Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman past still prominent in the cityscape, Nafplio offers history and heritage in spades. Try climbing the 999 steps up to the hilltop Palamidi fortress, where you can take in breathtaking views of the historic old town. Set aside some time to explore the old town on foot as well, admiring its cobbled lanes, colourful Venetian houses and the city’s oldest castle, Akronafplia. You can also take a short boat ride to Bourtzi – a 15th-century castle which rises majestically from the harbour.

Jutting out into the Argolic Gulf, Nafplio boasts an enviable coastline with sand as well as pebble shores ideal for a tropical interlude. You can head to the Karathona, Arvanitia or Neraki beaches to soak up the sun and swim in the crystal waters. After a relaxed afternoon spent sunbathing, you can get an introduction to Greek art and history from the bygone eras at the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio and the National Gallery - Nafplio Department.
