Cochin India

Kochi’s diverse cultural heritage is a direct result of its natural harbour which opened up the city to merchants from Europe, China and the Arabian Peninsula. The city's architecture and traditions are a testament to the influence of these diverse communities.

Located on the eastern coast of India, Kochi or Cochin is a modern city with deep historical roots. Portuguese, Dutch, British and Jewish traders thronged to its shores in the 14th century and left an indelible mark on the city’s urban landscape. At the historical seafront area of Fort Kochi, you’ll find heritage buildings with multicultural influences, churches, traditional homes and more. You can visit St Francis Church, the original burial place of the Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama, and Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, with its Gothic architecture and painted ceilings. Fort Kochi Beach is a popular spot for savouring views of the unique Chinese fishing nets, glorious sunsets and the busy port area.

Kochi is bursting with things to do and places to see. Art lovers will find the Kochi Biennale – held from December to April – an immersive experience showcasing contemporary art from around the world. For a bit of sightseeing, head to Mattancherry where places of worship rub shoulders with quaint shops and cafés. A walk through the centuries-old Jew Town will lead you to Paradesi Synagogue filled with exquisite antiques. Mattancherry Palace or Dutch Palace is worth a visit too, with its traditional Kerala architecture, royal furnishings and artworks.
