Ishigaki Island Japan

Tucked away in Japan’s southernmost corner, Ishigaki Island is a subtropical destination with a sprawling coastline that welcomes beachgoers, swimmers and divers. Situated close to a coral reef, Yonehara Beach is popular for snorkelling. Sunset Beach is an idyllic spot with a golden stretch of sand, delightful to stroll along during dusk. You can also get a glimpse of the colourful marine life through a glass-bottom boat tour along the emerald-hued waters of Kabira Bay. Lying close to the bay is Sukuji Beach, known for its shallow waters and gentle waves that are ideal for a refreshing dip in the sea.

On your holiday to Ishigaki Island, you’ll get to unwind in the company of a diverse set of backdrops. You can hike to the Tamatorizaki Observation Point for sweeping vistas of the Ibaruma Bay and Hirakubo Peninsula. Ishigakijima lies on the eastern part of the Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park and offers vast mangroves where you can enjoy birdwatching. Another interesting attraction is the Ishigaki Stalactite Cave, where you’ll get to discover a huge cavern covered with stalactites.

Your trip to Ishigaki Island may be dominated by outdoor activities, given the city’s coastal location and natural abundance. But if you’d like to learn more about the local culture and lifestyle, head to Yaeyama Museum to explore historical and traditional items related to the Yaeyama Islands – an archipelago that Ishigaki is a part of. Miyara Dunchi, one of the only preserved samurai-style residences, is another interesting place that you can add to your itinerary.
