Asturias largest city is home to a dizzying number of cultural institutions. You can learn all about the politician, philosopher and author Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos at the Museo Casa Natal de Jovellanos. Inside the beautiful 18th-century building, you can discover objects from his life alongside artworks by Asturians. Another highlight is the Muséu del Pueblu d’Asturies, an open-air artspace containing Asturian art installations and a range of items outlining what life used to be like in the region.
There are plenty of things to do and see outdoors in Gijón. Head to Santa Catalina Headland for gorgeous panoramic views of the Atlantic coast. The area is also home to ‘Eulogy to the Horizon’, a gigantic sculpture by celebrated Basque artist Eduardo Chillida, as well as plenty of walking trails and children playgrounds. The nearby beaches of San Lorenzo and Poniente are perfect for sunbathing on golden sands and cooling off in turquoise waters too.
