Biarritz is a coastal city on the Bay of Biscay in the Basque Country of France. This quaint seaside resort city has been a favourite getaway for centuries and is renowned for its elegant villas and surfing culture.
Beaches are the biggest attraction in Biarritz, and for good reason. The main beach, Grande Plage, is a stunning stretch of sand and water that lives up to its ‘grand’ name. For something a little more quiet and family-friendly, head south to the Old Port and you’ll discover Plage du Port Vieux. This small beach is set in a rocky cove which shelters it from the wind and large waves, making it great for the kids.
There are plenty of exciting things to do and see in Biarritz. For a little exercise, climb the 258 winding steps of the Phare de Biarritz, the city’s iconic lighthouse. Built in 1834 and rising 73 metres high, it offers sweeping views of the Basque coast. The massive and glamorous Hôtel du Palais is another highlight. Built in the 19th century for French royalty, it’s now a lavish beachside hotel complete with a swimming pool.
