Bern Switzerland

Bern, the capital city of Switzerland, is a compact city built around a bend on the Aare River. Its origins trace back to the 12th century, and is a city renowned for its medieval architecture, cobblestone streets and stunning vistas.

Bern is packed with many medieval attractions, most of which are located in the UNESCO-listed old town. These include the Zytglogge, a 13th-century tower that features a 15th-century astronomical clock, and the Kindlifresserbrunnen, an iconic statue that translates to the ‘Fountain of the Eater of Little Children’. This cartoonish, ogre statue dates back to the 16th century and has been stirring the imaginations of locals and visitors ever since. There’s also the Bern Minster, a striking Gothic cathedral that took over 400 years to complete. Nowadays, it stands proudly as the tallest cathedral in Switzerland.

There are plenty of activities in Bern that show off its history and stunning landscapes. The bear has played a large part in Bern folklore for centuries, and you can visit the furry animals at the BärenPark, a natural enclosure alongside the River Aar. The Gurten mountain is another highlight, offering panoramic views of the city, river and mountains. There’s fun for the whole family at the top including a playground and hiking trails as well as various eateries.
